Exploring creative depths |
A poets lasting journey |
"To me, to ‘BE’ a poet involves at least three things: a) vision and practice (the exercise and advancement of an aesthetic craft in pursuit of enunciating my vision); b) lifestyle (infusing poetic vision and practice into my lifework and modes of daily interpersonal communication); and c) tribal affiliation (membership in a tribe, a community of interest, a loosely associated collective of individuals who share in the broadest manner a curiosity about and passion for exploring aesthetic, spiritual, intellectual and emotional concerns through exercise of the written and spoken word).
The concerns of individual poets are numerous, and not always intersecting, among them: the expressive, reportive, the declarative, the argumentative, the ecstatic and the lamentative, the existential. All these may be pursued by an isolated human being, the artist in the attic. And in fact as we all know, most people we encounter in this world have precious little capacity to interact with a poet! Yet the conundrum is this – to be a poet is to a member of a worldwide tribal community of interest. One which offers breadth of shared technical experience and comradeship and hopefully plenty of ‘breathing room’ along the way. Is this even possible? Often enough., for me. That’s why I trust not only in the sheer alchemic power of the word, but place at least a part of my trust in the tribe of poets -- a collective whose purpose is to maximize the potential of the individual. "Poets I most admire are ones whose entire life is suffused into their writing, Laurie Anderson, Diane Di Prima, Audre Lorde these are women whose activism and other forms of art and living shine out from their poems. The music you listen to, the cake you bake, who you love and how, your politics, all of these elements are, to me, a form of poetics. Restoring a vintage 80s denim jacket, dyeing it purple in my sink, adding buttons inherited from my deceased relatives, imbuing this item with a new life, is connected to my practice of eco poetics. Everything a poet does is poetry."

"Poetry With a Bang not a whimper" |
I started poetry as a freedom of expression before it became a freedom from my soul tapping away at something else altogether and I had wrote several books, fronted several bands (some more successful and tuneful than others), fronted a spoken word Podcast (Spoken Label) and now writing articles on a weekly for a online arts magazine all linked to that frightened young man who didn’t now what he wanted. I think that young man if he had a time machine would be proud of what he grew up to become knowing my journey as a poet has took off in all kinds of directions but has remained honest to myself throughout.
